While it may be a medium often associated with the 1980's and 1990's, the promotional music video is, by no means, a thing of the past. It's true the impact of the format was lessened somewhat during the first decade of this millennium, when once culturally-dominant broadcasters like MTV essentially stopped showing videos in favour of reruns of old sitcoms and cartoons, and more cheaply-produced "reality" television programs. But then, in the late 2000's, something unexpected happened.
Precipitated by the rise in popularity of the likes of Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, and Justin Timberlake, artists who had all grown up idolizing the first generation of video superstars, the music video started to experience a resurgence. The proliferation of online video-sharing sites like Vimeo, DailyMotion, MySpace, Yahoo (remember them?), and of course, YouTube also played a key role. Suddenly, music videos began to make up some of the internet's most widely shared content, generating literally millions and millions of views. Sure, this wasn't the medium's halcyon days, when a curated stream of popular favourites were being simultaneously beamed into every living room around the country, kickstarting sonic trends and creating new fashion crazes at every turn...but maybe this was something better?
Viewers could now pick and choose when and where they wanted to watch their favourites and, as we're seeing now, this has lead to greater diversity in the music industry as a whole. With greater variety on offer, we've seen the diaspora of our musical landscape fracture, allowing artists who never would have found audiences through traditional video outlets to thrive before on-demand fanbases. And so, music video lives on. The technology has generally improved, and the budgets have generally shrunk, but the creative spark that captivated previous generations via "Thriller" and "Take On Me" still remains.
What follows is Wet Thud's survey of our favourite hundred videos of the past decade, from 2010 through 2019. Some are straightforward affairs that simply heighten the experience of the song. Some are astounding feats of visual headfuckery that will alter your brain forever. Whatever the case, we hope you enjoy taking a look through our list, and revisiting some of the best of what this decade had to offer.
